Critical Care
ICU Visitor Information and Guidelines
The physicians, nurses, and critical care staff at UMMC have one goal: to help your family member recover as quickly as possible. Our staff is specially trained to care for critically ill patients, and we strive to provide the highest level of patient care to every patient every day.
All critical care patients are monitored around the clock. Treatment decisions are made by a highly skilled team headed by the staff doctor. Care team members may include critical care physicians, fellows and medical residents, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and dietitians.
To help minimize your anxiety, nurses will communicate regularly with you about your family member's condition. Your physician meetings will be arranged according to each critical care unit's practice.
All critical care units are located in the Conerly Hospital for Critical Care.

Telephone information
Phones are located in each waiting area for your convenience. Designate one family member as the contact person for notification of a change in a patient's condition, and provide the nursing staff with the name and contact information of that person when no family member is in the waiting area.
Give family members and friends the waiting room phone number, so they may contact you to obtain information on a patient's condition. No information is given to individuals who call the unit directly.
Cell phones may be used by family members in the waiting area. Place cell phones on vibrate status or low ring tone while in waiting area. Please keep conversations in the waiting area brief and quiet.
